3 Harmful Shampoo Ingredients And Why We Banned Them

There was a time when shampoo, conditioners, and other hair care products were filled with lots of harmful ingredients- ie. sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. These three things serve their own purposes but overtime it has become apparent that they bring more harm than good.

Sulfates are a type of salt that are used in hair care products as cleansing agents. The most commonly used sulfates are ammonium lauryl sulfate (ALS), sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). These are considered the really “bad” sulfates. They are quite efficient as cleansing agents, but they are abrasive and stripping. Sulfates pull out the hair’s natural oils along with dirt, which leaves hair rough, brittle, and dry. Sulfates in shampoos can also lead to allergic reactions and a dry, itchy scalp.

Parabens are commonly used in both hair and skincare products. Parabens are a cost-effective synthetic alternative to microbial agents found in plants that serve as preservatives to prolong the shelf life of skincare and hair care products. However, parabens are easily absorbed by the skin and they can cause dry hair, irritated scalp, faded hair color, and hair loss. Hair care products that contain parabens are not healthy for your hair and possibly your overall health.

Phthalates are used in a wider variety of products. In addition to hair and skin care products, it is used in detergents, food and beverage containers, pharmaceuticals, and even children’s toys. Phthalates are colorless, odorless, oily liquids that are used to soften plastics. In hair care products, Phthalates are used as gelling agents meant to make the shampoo spreadable, enhance absorption, and prolong fragrances. Like parabens, Phthalates can be absorbed by the skin, but can also be inhaled or ingested. The European Union strictly prohibits the use of certain Phthalates because of studies that showed their disruptive effect on hormones.
